We first introduced the LifeStraw Challenge at the Future is Green conference at Long Beach, as members of our group presented information about Gabrielino's various environmental programs to the schools attending our workshop. 8 presentations were given to hundreds of students over 2 days.
At the annual Peace Day Celebration at Griffith Park, we held a booth with informational material about the LifeStraw Challenge. We also created a large cardboard model of a LifeStraw which was displayed near the stage, and arranged a short 3 minute presentation about the LifeStraw Challenge onstage to about 300 attendees.
At this event, two celebrity speakers were Pierce and Keely Brosnan. When Mrs. Brosnan visited our booth, she became extremely interested, and asked for our contact information. She was kind enough to offer to send out a letter we composed about the LifeStraw Challenge in her Christmas cards, and donated $5000 to our cause.
Furthermore, because the Peace Day celebration is held by the Jane Goodall Institute, we were asked to join Roots and Shoots, its community service organization for youth. After joining, we applied for a mini-grant, which gave us $150 to contribute toward costs for T-shirts.
Karen Oxrider, the California Regional Director of Roots and Shoots also helped us make our New Year's Day and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day events known to the Roots and Shoots community through emails.
Alice Pan, one of the members of our team and president of the Interact Club at Gabrielino, presented the LifeStraw Challenge to attendees of the Interact Symposium.
On New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, a total of 60 volunteers combed the Rose Parade route along Colorado Blvd for recyclables. Wearing T-shirts that state "Ask Me Why I'm Recycling," we informed anyone who asked us about the LifeStraw Challenge, gathered their recyclables, and invited them to recycle at Gabrielino's 2nd Annual Green Dream Festival.
At Gabrielino's annual environmental festival, we arranged a can and bottle drive, encouraging everyone who attended to bring their recyclables. We collected several bags, raising $560 in all. We also held a booth at the festival where we sold trashcan monitors and T-shirts. 50% of the money earned from these sales went to LifeStraw, and the other half went to the event coordinators so they can cover the event costs.
We made a presentation to the La Canada High School Green Club, at the end of which they voted to donate their school's recyclables to the LifeStraw Challenge.
Pickup of recyclables from La Cañada.
The first Pasadena Marathon took place this year, with the Start/Finish line at Pasadena City College and the route running across Pasadena for 26 miles, and from 5:30 am to 3 pm, LifeStraw volunteers collected recyclables and picked up trash. Our volunteers braved the cold and rain to help our cause, and in conjunction with L.A. Conservation Corps and Community Without Walls, we collected two whole truckloads of recyclables from the water stations and Start/Finish line!
Temple City High School held a benefit concert for the LifeStraw Challenge! The bands Cutout Casuals, Graduation Day, From Jupiter, Kid Finish, The Sequence, and HeartStop played at the school's Theatre 601 from 6 to 10 PM. Check out their flyers: [1] and [2].
The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County had their annual Earth Day celebration at the Sanitation Districts Parking Lot from 10 AM to 2 PM, featuring eco-friendly arts and crafts, a drum circle, green exhibits, puppet shows, gardening workshops, and more! We had several volunteers there holding a booth and collecting recyclables, and collected two full dumpsters of cans and bottles! Check out the flyer (.pdf) here.
Pasadena ’s annual Earth Day celebration was a major milestone of the LifeStraw Challenge, as the school year's last event. From 10 am to 4 pm, all kinds of environmental festivities here held, including recycling drop-offs and presentations about getting involved in implementing water solutions for life.
The second Rose Parade Recycling event. Once again, students took shifts and trekked up and down Colarado Boulevard during the night (and early morning) to collect campers' recyclables. A big thanks to Capsi House of CalTech for hosting us during the night, and Gabrielino students for their dedication.
